Here are some of the special events and missions that you'll learn about from Kana: It's also better to use the highest standards when recruiting. From what we've seen, it's better to recruit soldiers and train them and improve their gear (see #7), before you send them out patrolling the roads. Specifically, you'll need to talk to her to control your troops. Just about everything involving people will go through her. Here are the structures and improvements that you can build: Each time you leave the courtyard and then return to it, Veedle will have completed whatever project you last gave him, so it's possible to build up the keep very quickly. Veedle will take gold out of the keep's treasury first, but if you don't have enough there then you'll have to use your own funds.

Each time you give him an order to build something, it will cost you gold. Master Veedle (#9) is the stonemason in charge of renovating the keep and the surrounding lands. Still, many of the activities are beneficial (such as adding new shopkeepers for you to visit), and so it's worthwhile to play around with the keep and advance it as much as you can. The keep won't play a role in the campaign until Act III, and even then you won't need to have finished renovating it, and so most of the activities at the keep are optional. That means you can build up the keep as quickly or as slowly as you'd like. If you give an order to somebody and then leave the area where that person is, then when you return to the person the order will usually be completed, even if you simply stepped out of and then back into the area. The keep is sort of a mini-game, and it will use a different timeline than the rest of the campaign. The keep will function as your new Sunken Flagon, and you'll be able to use it to set your party composition. All in all I’m happy with both approaches to companions. When you return to Crossroad Keep, you'll be named its Captain, and you'll be given control over its people and lands. In both cases there a crafting ‘scheduling’ game to be juggled as well. In SWTOR the emphasis is on gearing and gaining affection with your companions, whereas in Neverwinter leveling them is the larger task with a bit of gearing on the side. If you are leveling multiple companions at once then at least you have other options if one companion is away training. Your active companion gets a chunk of experience at the same time when you hand in quests so it’s important to not keep a capped companion out all the time – that’s wasted companion experience!Ĭompanions need to be sent away for increasing amounts of time to level up, so timing handing in quests can also be important if you care about efficient leveling. The most important time to be aware of which companion is out however is when you hand-in quests. Occasionally I prefer to have a healer out, my white-quality cleric can keep my health topped up in-between fights but she’s not much use in combat though. My mimic is rather weak for this zone now…

So it pays to have a capped, best-quality available companion as your active helper.

Area damage effects can one-shot a companion and their AI-movement routines will not necessarily dodge them out of danger. Firstly a low-level companion, especially for a high level character, will be next to useless in combat in later zones. Although I’m only leveling one of them at a time through actively having them help me quest, there are also a few foibles of the system to note. In Neverwinter I have a set of four active companions for each of my two main characters. Neverwinter: efficient companion leveling No need for us to sit at crafting stations for hours leveling our crafting we just send people off on missions to do it in the background. It’s a fun crafting system that fits well with a more active adventuring playstyle. Beyond the decision of who gets to have a pet out at any given moment we are all working on crafting so we also have to send off our resting companions on crafting missions to gather rarer materials and to craft items.
